01:50 pm - There is poop in my yard
Alright when you are in the midst of potty training it does seem like all conversations end up about peeing an pooping. Izzy cracked us up at dinner last night. We were at a fancy restaurant, the kind where they clear the crumbs away from your place setting. Well the waitress was saying goodbye to us and Izzy blurts out, pretty loud, "There is poop in my yard". I know where it came from, I just dont know why he thought of it at that moment. When we were playing in the yard earlier in the day, we noticed a pile that Frodo (our dog) had left in the grass. Izzy was very obsessed with it at the time and obviously he was still thinking about it at dinnertime.

12:44 pm - Kidisms that make you smile
Couple cute things that Izzy has done lately...

If you break something into parts, such as cutting up food, Izzy will say "Put it back a part".

I think all kids go through a "NO" phase but Izzy's makes you burst out laughing. I'll try to describe it since we haven't gotten it on film yet. His "NO" is more like "noooooo" with an "ew" sound as he drags it out. This isn't that funny on its own. However, when he is making the sound he also takes his upper lip over his upper teeth consequently flattening his nose and making his eyes bulge. We don't know where he picked up this behavior but it makes it hard to keep a straight face.

The other night Gonzo, Izzy, and Frodo were outside throwing the Frisbee before starting dinner. Gonzo asked Izzy what he wanted to eat for dinner. Izzy's response was, "I don't want to talk about dinner right now". He was too busy playing with a stick and dirt.

We are working on potty training, he is interested in wearing underwear but not telling us when he needs to go. So, right now it is all about getting him on the toilet really frequently, because he will go once there.

09:03 am - Happy Halloween
Izzy had a great Halloween. We met up with a couple neighborhood friends and went trick-or-treating. Every time we went up to a house Stupendousman (Calvin and Hobbes alter ego) said "Trick or Treating", then when they started to give him candy, it had to go in his hand (not in his bag), he would look at it and then put it in his bag. I didn't get this because he doesn't have a clue what the different kinds of candy are, so I guess he just liked looking at the wrappers. In the end he was very good at saying "thank you", sometimes unprompted. We have some great photos and Gonzo made a little comic. Here is the first page...

09:22 am - Pain and Suffering Lead to Success?!?
I think we can describe my sinus surgery back in May as a success.  The cold that I caught earlier this week has not turned into a sinus infection.  The main goal of the surgery was to be able to catch a cold and be exposed to allergens without a sinus infection.  So, this cold lasted 2 days, whereas a sinus infection would have taken a week and needed antibiotics to recover.  Woo woo!!!!

Also, for those of you keeping up with my job instability, I finally signed a contract with USF.  It will be a crazy busy year.

02:09 pm - Vacation
We had a great vacation two weeks ago. We went to Murphy NC. The mountains were relaxing but still very hot. Izzy got to ride the Thomas train and a school bus. We think enjoyed the school bus ride from the parking lot to the train more than the train ride. During the train ride he seemed a bit overwhelmed. Of course we were all being blasted with Thomas music during the ride. Izzy also enjoyed playing in the rivers and throwing rocks.

Update on the big bed transition:
Izzy is really good about going to sleep in his big bed. Most days it only takes about 30 mins to get him to fall asleep. Most importantly he is sleeping through the night in the big bed. We haven't gotten him used to taking naps in the big bed but we think it will work out soon.

07:01 am - Big Bed Continued
Last night wasn't great but it felt successful. Getting Izzy to sleep took less time, 1 hour.  He woke at 3:00 and went right back to bed without a fight.  Then was sound asleep in 20 min.  Unfortunately he woke again at 3:50 insisting on a Daddy hug.  Gonzo was back in bed in just under an hour.  I think we are making progress.

11:29 am - Big Bed Update
The transition to a big bed is resulting in the whole family loosing sleep.  Monday night it took 2 hours to get Izzy to sleep but he slept through the night.  Last night it took ~1.5 hours to get Izzy to sleep.

Then he woke at 11:00 and wouldn't go back to sleep....
11:00 to 12:00 Mom rocks and gets Izzy asleep in his bed
12:05 Izzy wakes and realizes mom isn't in the room anymore
12:10 to 1:05 Gonzo sits next to Izzy's bed and gets him to sleep
1:10 Izzy wakes and realizes dad isn't in the room anymore
1:15 mom tries to get Izzy calmed down but he only wants dad
1:20 Gonzo tries to get Izzy to sleep by sleeping in the bed with Izzy
2:00 Izzy falls asleep
3:15 Gonzo makes his way out of Izzy's bed and into our bed
6:15 We wake Izzy for school
Approximate time awake 11:00 to 2:00 (+1 hour till Gonzo was in his own bed)

I think both Gonzo and I are ok with the lengthy process to get Izzy to sleep but we are really frustrated with the middle of the night disruptions that are unpredictable in occurrence and length.  We had gotten used to sleeping through the night.

10:52 am - Big Bed Day
We transitioned Izzy to a twin size bed yesterday.  Well at least we started the process.

He wouldn't take a nap in the big bed, just wanted to play.  At bedtime he went to sleep very easily, of course he was exhausted from not taking a nap.  When he woke at 2:30am he did not want to go back to sleep alone, which isn't really that unusual.  However, now he isn't confined by a crib.  He started crying at the gate we put on his door.  Then a bit of quiet followed by a thud.  Yeah, he moved his step stool for getting into the bed to the gate and was about to climb over.  I knew he would figure that trick out but I thought it would take him at least a week, not 5 min.

So, Gonzo and I took turns trying tricks to get him to sleep.  At 4:45am we decided that one of us would just sleep with him till we needed to wake at 6:30.

Lets hope tonight runs smoother.  Although I think Gonzo and I both agree that it wasn't that bad of a first night.

07:06 pm - Some day we will be diaper free....
I'm sure most of you dont really want to hear this but ...... Izzy pooped on the toilet today for the first time.  Gonzo and I were shouting for joy!!!   Izzy is pretty good about peeing on the toilet when you put him on it.  However he rarely asks to go to the toilet (except when we are out in public  and he wants to see the bathroom).  Today he asked and then pooped on the toilet.

We are still a long way away from being diaper free but this is a step in the right direction.

11:33 am - Water Boy
Izzy likes swimming, or at least being in a pool.  We thought he would be terrified, since we can't get him to put his feet down in the sand at the beach.

This photo makes me smile every time I see it.

07:54 am - He really tries to be good
This week has been filled with many ups and downs.  Izzy is definitely pushing buttons, learning about behavior boundaries. It seems like every other day is dominated with disobedient behavior.  Wednesday was a first when he bit his teacher. It does appear that he understood his behavior was not appropriate.  I felt like our discussion with him about "no biting" was effective when the following day I was rocking him to sleep and letting him know how good a boy he was on that day (the day after the bitting incident).  Izzy started talking about all the things he did that day (painting, glitter, playing with balls, throwing the balls, etc.)  when he offered this statement with his very concerned sad look on his face, "No Biting Ms. Candace (his teacher)".  To paraphrase one of Izzy's books that was originally my book as a kid (The Gorilla Did It), He really tries to be good.

Other notes...
Izzy seems like he is going through a growth spurt....eating lots of food while his belly is thinning out , making him look taller and leaner.
Gonzo and I are getting some alone time this weekend, heading to the beach to relax.  Sooooooooo excited!!!!!  Hopefully Izzy (and Frodo) will do ok with sleeping over at grandma's.

08:50 am - Izzy's Birthday Weekend
Izzy had a great birthday weekend, thanks to all his friends and family.

We were awful parents and took Izzy to the Dr on his birthday.  He was an excellent patient.  The Dr. said he is growing and developing at a wonderful rate.  She was impressed with his recent trick of answering correctly the question "How old are you?".  To the surprise of the nurse, Izzy didn't react (no kicking or crying) to his shot (his delayed cry was short).

Saturday was highlighted with baking and decorating a very cool Spiderman cake.

Sunday was Izzy's birthday party.  Several friends joined Izzy at Lowry Park for playing with balls, tunnels, coloring, bubbles, and a pinata.  Izzy had a ball and was still revved up when it was time for bed.  He loves all of his gifts.  We are slowing reintroducing them over the next couple days.  Last night he slept with his monkey knitted with love by Diana.

I will post pics as soon as I receive them from friends and family.  Neil and I were too busy to take any pics ourselves.

12:20 pm - Eve of Izzy's Birthday
It has been a very long time since the last posting. We are at the eve of Izzy's 2nd birthday. I'm pondering how we got to this point. A year ago he wasn't even walking. Today he uses sentences, even asked Diana a question on Sunday, "Is knitting hard?". What two year old contemplates the difficulty of knitting?

Izzy entered a new class this week (new teachers and some new students). He has transitioned surprisingly well and his teachers are impressed with him (his language skills, his personality, his manners).

Lets see how the birthday party with a dozen kids goes on Sunday. Spiderman theme, balls, tunnels, cake, 90 degree heat... Woo Woo!!!!

12:41 pm - No more milk
The day has come. Izzy has decided that he no longer wants my milk. He has only been breastfeeding in the morning and before bed since he turned a year old. We decided to give him till 18 mo. to eliminate the morning and evening feedings (on his own schedule). This week at night he would ask for milk and then reject it by pushing me away with a disgusted face. We are now at three full days without breastmilk. So, I think it is safe to say that he has completely weaned himself. I had to pump this morning because I was in soo much pain from engorgement. However, I am concerned that if I have to keep pumping to relieve the pain that I will keep the milk supply from stopping. Does anyone have any advice?

Although I will miss the special times we had breastfeeding, I'm glad to have my body back. You don't realize how many things you have to worry about consuming while breastfeeding. I'm free!

We need to work on Izzy letting Gonzo rock him to sleep. Unfortunately he is still very attached to me being the one to put him to sleep.
